The debt that accompanies the education of so many college students can be a crushing burden. When a profession requires post graduate studies, like medical school, the cost may prevent people from a profession that society sorely needs. Further, access to medical care is not evenly distributed access the country. When a young doctor has huge debt, economics may make rural or economically depressed communities an unattractive option for practice. The Doctors in the Boondocks scholarship seeks to address both of these issues.
